I am working on a research project titled “Photovoltaic MPPT Performance Adaptability to Partial Shading Resilience and Load Variations with PSO.” In MATLAB/Simulink, I have implemented and validated the PSO-based MPPT algorithm using a C-function block, and I now wish to port this into Typhoon HIL Control Center for hardware-in-the-loop testing and real-time verification.

My MATLAB code (attached below) takes PV voltage and current (Vpv, Ipv) as inputs and generates the duty cycle (D_out) as output. It uses persistent variables for swarm initialization, particle updates, personal/global best tracking, and smoothing of the duty cycle output.

I would like guidance on:

Code Structure: How to adapt my MATLAB C-function for Typhoon HIL’s C-block (syntax, supported functions, use of init() and step()).
Inputs/Outputs: Correct way to declare Vpv, Ipv as inputs and D_out as output, and how to connect the duty cycle output to PWM blocks.
Implementation Steps: The procedure to load and compile this code in the Schematic Editor, handle unsupported functions (e.g., rand, linspace), and properly manage persistent variables.

Hi Gordon,

It would be helpful if you could send your code for the MPC as it would allow as to better solve this issue. (The whole model would be helpful too).

In the meantime you could try using a different discretization method for your models equations because, depending on what method you use, they could introduce some stability issues (E.g. Euler forward could make a stable system unstable). I would suggest using trapezoidal integration (If it's fast enough for you) as most of the characteristics transfer over.

Sampling time (Ts) would also affect stability of your system in your case, so you could try adjusting it and see if it fixes your issue.

Python code explanation can easily be obtained utilizing some of the publicly available AI models. You can also seek help from Typhoon HIL AI Chatbot Relphie embedded at our official website page in the right bottom corner of the screen.

The main idea behind Modbus API is to create python instance which is acting as a SCADA based Modbus client. You can make more than one instance of TCPModbusClient and for each of them, you can define different server (host) addresses. In the application, Modbus server can be a HIL device, any other device, or both of them.

Specifically the Generic PV Plant, Generic battery and the Microgrid powered by a wind farm examples could be of good use to you. These are not necessarily low voltage DC microgrids, but you could tweak them to your liking and needs.

Actually, the MMS Server is implemented in a way that it keeps the connection with the MMS client even after stopping the HIL simulation. If you want to forcibly disconnect from the client you can call again hil.load_model(file=cpd, vhil_device=False) function after stopping the simulation.

Hi Leonardo,

If you can see that the SCADA input corresponding to irradiation is changing according to the desired readings from the text file, the issue is not related to component not responding to irradiation profile.

It is hard to guess exactly what is causing the problem in your model without seeing it. Here are some common mistakes:

1. You forgot to enable the PV Power Plant
2. The parameters of the grid (voltage and frequency) are not set according to nominal parameters of the PV power Plant.

The easiest way to check this is to open PV Power Plant Interface Subpanel in HIL SCADA and check the DER state and whether there is any alarm message:

The power transformer is one of the key elements in every substation. Such an important element has to be protected from faults most efficiently. Model-based testing can give provide a deep insight into the behaviour of the power transformer during the fault conditions.

In most applications, three-phase transformers use a three-limb core (core-type transformer). This type of core produces accurate results during an asymmetrical fault for both linear and nonlinear models (including saturation). During asymmetrical voltage conditions, the zero-sequence flux of a core-type transformer returns outside the core, through an air gap, structural steel, and a tank. Thus, the natural zero-sequence inductance L0 (without delta winding) of such a core-type transformer is usually very low (typically 0.5 pu 100 pu). This low L0 value affects voltages, currents, and flux unbalances during linear and saturated operation.[1]

A high-fidelity model of three-phase transformers that use a three-limb core (core-type transformer) plays a key role in testing and validating protection schemes for asymmetrical faults.

Task Requirements

Your task is to create three-phase transformers that use a three-limb core in the Typhoon HIL Control Center. In the attachment of the task, you can find two models.

The first model is the reference Simulink model and the second is the Typhoon HIL model. In the Simulink reference model, the two same transformers are modelled. The only difference is one uses default core mode, while the other transformer uses a three-limb core (core-type) transformer. The results of the different core types during the fault can be seen in the image below:

In the Schematic editor model, you can find the two transformers as well. The one model is enabled which represents the transformer that uses the default core model. The second model is disabled and needs to be implemented. The results of the fault in HIL SCADA can be seen in the image below:

Regardless of application domain, the recommend workflow is the following:

To improve usability and appearance you should consider masking your component and applying handlers.

If you plan to share your models and provide continuous support for the same, versioning and ease of maintenance are important. In this case it is highly recommended to package your models and HIL SCADA panels as user libraries and widget libraries.

Finally, if you want to take a more software-centric sharing and deployment approach with your authored work, packaging it as a software installation is very effective way to do it. For this purpose it is highly recommended to use the Package Manager. In this way you are ready to hit the HIL Marketplace if you pass the review process.

Various simulation types ((MIL, SIL, C-HIL, P-HIL, etc.) will be explored, test automation, industry communication protocols/interoperability, microcontroller programming, model exchange/conversion, etc. So both participants that are strongly based in fundamental electrical engineering (power electronics, power systems) and those more leaning towards computer sciences will be able to find something exciting to contribute.

If your work scores high in review, Typhoon HIL will officially endorse you by publishing and promoting your work across its channels. Here is an example of authored content.

The endorsement credit is the mention of your personal information (your name, organization, etc. per your instruction) in the publications/promotions. You can use Typhoon HIL's endorsement either to promote your organization or as a unique letter of reference for personal promotion. Often collaboration will be needed so endorsement credits will involve a list of contributors.

The endorsement credit is not only limited through creative work. It can also be earned by contributing with equipment. I.e. if you have access to HIL testbed, but cannot contribute through creative work you could help another Bootcamp member without access to HIL testbed by setting up remote access for them in order to validate the work on the model or test their control software in real time.

To qualify for endorsement credits you need to be officially enrolled in the Applications Bootcamp. Receiving actual endorsement is a matter of evaluation and review of program mentors and people directing Typhoon HIL public content.
